Summer Crappie Fishing

Summer is quickly approaching and that means only one thing to crappie anglers, fishing. Immediately following the spring spawning period, most crappie will begin to seek out cooler water in deeper parts of the lake.

Crappie can also prefer to linger near any sunken piles of brush or other structure suitable for hiding around. This means that while it is quite possible to catch crappie in depths between 10 and 30 feet, you can also find them in water that is much shallower as well. If you are fishing near the shore, keep a lookout for any fallen trees that are near drops or under water channels.

Crappie also have a habit of suspending themselves near the bottom of a lake. If you are fishing for crappie using live bait, start by finding the bottom of the lake and then raising your lure up a foot at a time until you have found at what depth the fish are biting at. If you are lucky enough to have a depth finder on hand, this could tell you better at what depth to begin.

If you prefer to fish using jigs, it is very important that you remember to fish extremely slowly while also staying light on your drop. Remember to experiment with different colored lures in order to get a feel for what the fish prefer, however, chartreuse is usually a rather popular shade with crappie. To make your presentation even more irresistible, you can combine your lire with a live minnow as well.

Your strategy in deeper waters might have to be a little different as the summer gets underway. If you happen to be fishing in a lake that is around 30 feet deep, the water will gradually warm; making the oxygen levels drastically decrease the deeper you go. Because of this, the fish are likely to be holding at depths more like 14 or 15 feet deep instead of 30 feet later in the summer. One of the best crappie fishing tips to remember is to not fish as deep as you normally might in late summer.

Summer crappie fishing is one of the best pastimes that you can participate in once the weather warms up. Whenever you set out on your fishing trip, always try to make a mental note of where you might notice any piles of brush that could be hiding plenty of fish.
